Council Rejects Investigation Of Possible Enforcement Issues

HUGO - In a rare 3-2 vote, the Hugo City Council on June 16 rejected a motion made by Mayor Fran Miron that would have directed staff to compile information on whether hunting activities within the DNR's Paul Hugo Farms Wildlife Management Area violate the city's hunting ordinance.

Miron made his motion during discussion of a petition presented to the city by resident Alice Waller. Waller's petition, referred in May to the council's Ordinance Review Subcommittee, called on the city to adopt an ordinance that would prohibit the discharge of firearms on all public lands and waters.

Volunteers Are Eyes And Ears Of Weather Service

HUGO - When severe weather strikes, Matt Todd is one of dozens of volunteers around the Metro area who picks up a radio and calls in his observations.

The Hugo resident serves on the frontline of a hidden network of Skywarn storm spotters - individuals who are trained to detect the telltale signs of weather events which could prove deadly. These volunteers are the ground army of the National Weather Service.

"It's kind of like we're the eyes on the ground for the weather service," explained Todd, who lives on 158th Street in Hugo.

$3.3 Million Centerville Street Project Moves Ahead

City Council vote Is Unanimous

CENTERVILLE - Since the city's 2009 Street Improvement Project was first drawn up last fall, the colored areas on the map showing its scope have gradually shrunk in size.

On Tuesday, June 10, another five streets were struck off the plans, bringing the cost of the project down to $3.3 million from a starting figure of $7.8 million.

But on Wednesday, June 11, the members of Centerville City Council voted unanimously to go ahead and commission plans and specifi cations for the newly downsized proposal, which will see 16 of Centerville's streets undergo an array of improvements.
