Work Remains on Hidden Spring Shoreline
Pay out another $6,200 and your park will be safe from the lake.
That was the message to the Centerville City Council from City Engineer Mark Statz, who reported on the work that would have to be done to protect the Hidden Spring Park shoreline from the choppy wave action of Centerville Lake.
Discussion over the winter has revolved around remedial efforts which must be performed at the park to bring it to the standard expected by council members.
Concerns were raised previously when the shoreline eroded and plants were washed away soon after the completion of the park in time for last year's Fête Des Lacs Festival.
At the council's March 12 meeting, Statz outlined what the contract engineering company, Bonestroo, proposed to avoid a repeat of last year's problems.
"This is something I want the council to make sure they are comfortable with from an aesthetic point of view," Statz explained, as he described the rocks and vegetation which would line the shore.
"It's a wild look - it's not manicured plants. It becomes a pretty wild and vegetated look.
"We wanted it not just to be rocks so that it looked like an armored shoreline, so it will be covered in green."
However, Council Member Tom Lee expressed concern that recommendations by a member of the Parks and Recreation Committee with some expertise in soils and shoreline protection had not been followed fully, and requested more time to allow the parks committee to look over the new proposals.
No action was taken by the council on March 12.
In other action, the council:
. Heard that this year's Fete Des Lacs Festival, from Aug. 1-3, will include a mud volleyball tournament on Sunday, free bands on Friday, and a battle of the teen bands contest on Saturday.
. Asked the city attorney to look into a request from the Centerville Lions Club for funding of the festival to the tune of $19,044, as it was feared that some of the items in the budget could not be supported by public funds.
. Approved a request from the Lions to grant a temporary gambling permit to cover a fundraising raffl e and bingo, to tie in with the festival.
. Heard from Rep. Bob Dettmer (District 52A), who gave his backing to Centerville's Fête Des Lacs parade when he dropped in to the meeting.
. Approved a service agreement with assessor Kenneth Tolzmann, who will now conduct the city's property assessments. He replaces the service previously provided by Anoka County, which raised its fees this year.
. Granted a 2 a.m. option liquor license to Sager's Bar and Grill.
. Agreed to the purchase of a new copier for City Hall at the cost of $10,427 plus tax. The old copier will be used in the new Public Works building, while the old Public Works copier will either be donated to a good cause or recycled. Anyone interested in the old copier should contact City Hall.
. Supported a suggestion by City Administrator Dallas Larson that a sidewalk trial for the downtown redevelopment project be carried out in front of Centerville City Hall, which would then benefit from a decorative sidewalk completed in diff erent color combinations.
