Hanzal Subdivision Approved

At its March 14 meeting, the Centerville City Council unanimously passed four motions that will allow the Hanzal Subdivision development to go forward. The motions were based on recent recommendations made by the Planning & Zoning Commission after several lengthy and heated public hearings.

The first and second motions respectively amended the city's comprehensive plan and changed the zoning of the entire 6.36-acre Hanzal Subdivision - located at 7381 Old Mill Road - to Single Family Residential (R-2). Portions of the property were zoned Public/ Semi-Private (P-1) and Single Family Residential-Estate (R-5).

The third motion approved the preliminary plat for the development.

The fourth motion approved a variance to permit a 25-foot front-yard setback on one parcel of the property, 10 feet less than the normal 35 feet required in this zoning district.

A handful of residents were present at the meeting, some wishing to present additional testimony. However, since public hearings on the issue have already been closed, City Administrator Dallas Larson told the public that "legal counsel has advised the city not to accept any additional comments this evening."

City Attorney Kurt Glaser noted that "neighbors have complained about everything from [increased] traffic to lake air diminution" that would allegedly result if the subdivision was allowed to go forward.

The project will result in a six-lot subdivision. The Hanzal's home is already located on one lot.

Pavilion Purchase Authorized

Council Passed two separate motions authorizing the purchase of two pavilions from Flanagan Sales for the price of $24,969 each.

One pavilion will be located in the new park at 1601 LaMotte Drive. The other pavilion will be located across the street in Laurie LaMotte Memorial Park.

The cost includes both the structure and installation. Flanagan Sales was recommended to the council by City Engineer Mark Statz.

In other action, the council:

. Established a city credit card use policy. The policy authorizes the city administrator, finance director, and other specifically authorized employees to use the card to charge purchases for city business. The policy also authorizes the public works department to use a fuel credit card. The city credit card may not be used for personal purchases.

. Passed a motion by a 3-2 vote restricting parking on certain stretches of County Aid Highway 54 and County Road Highway 14 within the city limits. Anoka County requested the parking restrictions be enacted for the duration of the CSAH 14 reconstruction project. The motion passing the parking restrictions was opposed by Council Members Linda Broussard Vickers and Jeff Paar.

. Vacated a part of Westview Street between the west line of Lot 10, Block 9, Centerville, and a point 160 feet east of that line. The vacation will result in half of the property reverting to the adjoining property owners, half each way, subject to the city maintaining an easement for drainage and utility purpose in the area.

. Passed a motion allowing the Centennial Soccer Club to use Laurie LaMotte Memorial Park for games and practices during specific times from April to October of this year.
