Storm Water Innovation Wins Cash
An innovative approach to storm water drainage in downtown Centerville has been given the official blessing of the Centerville City Council.
The city has won three grants, totaling $330,845, to make storm water improvements under the downtown redevelopment project, and it is the project's creative approach to the problem which has won it success.
"The reason we are getting grant money for this is it's quite an innovative re-usage design," said City Engineer Mark Statz, explaining that the $534,805 project would see storm water collected from new ponds to be constructed along Sorel Street and an alley off Heritage Street. The runoff , which will pass through the existing St. Genevieve Church pond, will be used to irrigate the ball fields at Laurie LaMotte Memorial Park.
"We are going over and beyond, and killing two birds with one stone," he added.
The portion of the project not covered by grant money will be funded by a $14,204 fee charged to the developer behind the downtown project and $189,756 from the city's storm water fund.
"I think it's a wonderful idea," said Council Member Tom Lee. The plans for the 2008 project are still at a draft stage and the city engineer will now be working on the fi ner details of the system before any final design is given approval for construction by the council.
In other action, the council:
. Approved an encroachment agreement for a fence to be located partially within the city's right-of-way at 7310 Old Mill Road.
. Adopted a new ordinance entitling senior citizens and those citizens in active military service to apply to defer payment of special assessments.
. Authorized City Administrator Dallas Larson to make a decision on the question of allowing volunteers to perform tree trimming work in Eagle Park after discussion with the city attorney.
. Gave permission to Larson to spend no more than $3,400 in the restoration of the boulevard on Heritage Street.
. Authorized engineer Statz to prepare plans and specifi cations for the 2008 sealcoat/crack sealing project.
. Passed a resolution assigning duties relating to the establishment of new city bank accounts and the transfer of funds within existing accounts.
. Approved a resolution reassigning a special assessment on a property under the Fairview Street Project following the discovery of a typographical error which resulted in the wrong home being assessed.
