Thumbs Down On City Well Expense–For Now
The Centerville City Council heard at its Feb. 24 meeting that the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is requiring that the city retrofit its existing municipal wells so that well water levels may be more closely monitored.
City staff solicited proposals for the work and recommended that the council authorize E.H. Renner & Sons of Elk River to install drawndown monitoring equipment in each of the city’s two wells for a total of $13,125.20. The work would also include programming the city’s SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system to accommodate the wiring changes.
Council didn’t buy it and tabled the matter, requesting staff come up with Plan B— possibly deferring the work until other well maintenance is necessary.
City Administrator Dallas Larson told Th e Citizen that the city’s draft water supply plan referred to the possible addition of a third well, but that a new interconnect agreement with the City of Lino Lakes may make the well unnecessary even in the long run.
The city will resubmit its draft plan to the DNR with modifi cations in a “wait and see” approach.
In other action, the council:
• Authorized payment of Pay Request #2 from Dresel Contracting in the amount of $64,089.85 for pond dredging work.
• Approved a request from the Rice Creek Watershed District to continue hosting a water monitoring station behind City Hall. RCWD proposes to pay for and install a stream gauge to monitor flow volume in Clearwater Creek.
• Recognized by resolution that special assessments related to road improvements at 7389 Mill Road were paid in full in March 2009 and that Anoka County sent out an erroneous tax bill in 2010.
