No Reimbursement For Debris Removal
Council voted unanimously against reimbursing residents for costs they incurred while removing storm debris from their private property.
After the storm ripped through town on the night of Monday, August 13, many Centerville residents removed downed trees and other debris from their properties on the morning and aft ernoon of August 14.
During an emergency meeting on the aft ernoon of August 14, council passed a motion authorizing the city to tap into Anoka County SCORE funds to help residents pay for the removal of storm debris on their private property. Th is motion, however, didn't cover costs incurred by residents who removed debris from their property earlier in the day.
"I think we found a solution to the problem very quickly," said Council Member Tom Lee in support of the council's response.
"I wish [residents who removed debris earlier] would've been more patient. Th at lack of patience, I'm afraid, is going to cost them because we can't reimburse them."
During the meeting, a resident who lives on Brian Drive criticized the council for its decision, saying that the city should have had an emergency response plan in place so that a publicly-funded cleanup could have begun earlier in the day.
Later in the meeting, council passed a motion stipulating that the city's publicly-funded cleanup eff ort would end on August 23. Linda Broussard Vickers voted in opposition, making the tally 4-1. City Administrator Dallas Larson estimated that the city will ultimately pay Rivard Contracting $12-13,000 for debris cleanup, with most of the money coming from SCORE funds and the city's emergency contingency fund.
