Kidz 'n Biz Buzz Grows

What's that wonderful smell wafting from so many residents' kitchens these days? It's batch after batch of chocolate chip cookies, as bakers of all ages fine-tune their secret recipes. They'll all be vying for "The Big Chipper" trophy for the best cookie at the 3rd annual Kids 'n Biz Fest on Sunday, April 22 at Oneka Elementary School in Hugo.

The cookie contest is great fun (see complete rules, posted online at www.ReadTheCitizen.com), but it is just a small part of the free event sponsored by the Hugo Business Association (HBA), the Hugo Economic Development Authority (EDA) and The Citizen. The Kids 'n Biz Fest is designed to help bring businesses and the Hugo community together for a vibrant and fun-filled afternoon. The event will run from 1 to 4 p.m.

Hugo City Administrator Mike Ericson is on the planning committee for the festival, and he is very excited about this year's lineup of games and entertainment.

Learning In The Wild

Some 22 wild acres near Centennial Middle School have been officially designated as a "School Forest Area," creating educational possibilities ranging from cutting-edge geotechnology research to outdoor poetry classes.

Brian, Katie and Thomas, all Centennial Middle School 8th graders, demonstrated how to measure the circumference of a tree. According to Centennial Middle School geography and social studies teacher Kevin Setterholm, students will learn to use environmental data - for instance, tree circumference and height - collected in the newly designated school forest area.

"What's really valuable about this is that now our kids can get hands-on experience with both environmental skills and geotechnological skills," said middle school social studies and geography teacher Kevin Setterholm, who spearheaded the project with earth sciences teachers David Mundal and Richard Nipp, and Principal Jerry Meschke. ... Oodles Of Noodles For A Benefit

Online Holiday Ticket Sales Underway

Audrey Foxley sat up in her bed the middle of the night over six weeks ago. She was watching TV before she went to sleep and saw a report about a wedding paid for entirely by sponsors.

Shelly Bredemus, Kristin Indihar, and John Bredemus serve up spaghetti dinners at the benefit held for the Seiler Family at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Lino Lakes. The Oct. 29 event, which featured a large silent auction, drew hundreds.

In her senior year of college, Foxley's daughter, Colleen Seiler, was diagnosed with Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy, which affects the strength of her shoulders and hips. ... More

Centerville Pet Foods Hosts Clinic

The third Saturday of every month, Centerville Pet Foods, 1885 Main St., sponsors a Pet Adoption Clinic. On October 21, RPAW and Otter Lake Animal Care Center brought numerous canine and feline "babies" of varying ages for the public to meet and, hopefully, adopt into a loving home.

RPAW (Rescued Pets Are Wonderful), which regularly participates in the event, not only had some animals at the clinic for the public to meet, but many of the animals' "foster parents" were there, too.

Hannah, 9, played with Dottie at Centerville Pet Foods on Saturday, Oct. 21. Hannah lives in Lino Lakes.
