Hugo resident Jennifer Schmit, 10, has a special relationship with the headwaters of the Mississippi at Lake Itasca. At 10 months, she made her first crossing of the river on the log with her mother; at 7 years, she fell in while crossing with her dad! Here, Jennifer reads The Citizen next to the monument, which reads: "Here 1475 feet above the ocean the 'Mighty Mississippi' begins to flow on its winding way 2552 miles to the Gulf of Mexico."
