Road Seal Coating On Hold
At its May 5 meeting, the Hugo City Council approved a number of bid awards for annual road maintenance projects. Following staff's recommendation, however, council voted to reject all bids for the city's seal coating project, as repairs are needed on numerous roads before seal coating can take place later in the summer.
Among the awarded bids were:
. The graveling project was awarded to MJ Raleigh Trucking, Inc. in the amount of $100,893.90.
. The dust control project was awarded to Dustcoating, Inc. in the amount of $114,793.
. The crack filling project was awarded to Fahrner Asphalt in the amount of $17,000.
. The parking lot and driveway seal coating project was awarded to Gopher State Sealcoat, Inc. in the amount of $11,010.
. The miscellaneous concrete project award was awarded to Prestige Concrete, Inc. in the amount of $34,216. In other action, council:
. Authorized city staff to advertise for bids for the repair of numerous rural bituminous roadways in the city. The project, which is estimated to cost $130,000, will be funded via the city's Street Maintenance Fund and the cost savings realized from the city's 2008 graveling and dust control projects. Bids will be opened May 30 and will be awarded at the council's first meeting in June, with work to take place during the summer prior to the city's crack filling and seal coating projects, tentatively slated for July and August, respectively.
. Approved the EDA's recommendation to appoint members to a subcommittee that will work on developing the city's Business Retention and Expansion Draft Work Plan. Members of the subcommittee include EDA Commissioners Jim Bever, Jan Arcand and Brian Thistle, along with Joe Houle from Premier Bank, Bonnie Cheesebrow, and Steve Larson.
. Approved the retirement and letter of resignation of firefighter Roger Dirks. Dirks has been a member of the Hugo Fire Department for more than 23 years, and will be recognized by council at a future meeting.
. Approved the hiring of four seasonal employees for the Public Works Department. The city received fifty applications and held twenty interviews before filling the positions. Seasonal employees will be paid $11 per hour.
. Approved a proclamation that establishes May 2008 as "Older Americans Month." The working title of the document is "Working Together for Strong, Healthy, and Supportive Communities."
. Approved Dave Strub's application to install a slalom water ski course on Sunset Lake. In recent years, homeowners on Sunset Lake have applied on an annual basis to install the course.
. Scheduled interviews for prospective Planning Commissioners for May 20 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
. Approved Mike Ball's application to allow residents on Round Lake to water ski on the lake's slalom course.
