Volunteers Help Hugo Residents Pick Up The Pieces

A total of one thousand volunteers spent a sunny day last Saturday cleaning up after a tornado and subsequent hailstorm wreaked havoc in Hugo the previous Sunday. Here, helpers cleared rafters and other debris from a small pond near a home on the south side of 159th Street North between Finley Avenue and Fenway Avenue. Seven hundred of those volunteers were deployed in eastern Hugo, where storm debris was scattered over a number of square miles. According to officials, four thousand additional volunteers could not be accommodated and had to be turned away. For more photos, see Pages 11-14.
