Looking Back At 2008

HUGO, CENTERVILLE & LINO LAKES – The year 2008 was a year we’re not likely to forget.

State’s Economic Crisis May Jeopardize Tornado Reimbursement

Aid To Devastated Cities—A Whim, Or A State Responsibility?

HUGO – According to some, the state’s economic crisis may jeopardize Hugo’s effort to be reimbursed for city funds spent during its emergency response in the days and weeks following last May’s tornado.

“I’m sure there’s going to be an impact,” said Rep. Bob Dettmer (R-Forest Lake) when asked how the state’s projected $5.27 billion deficit for 2009 and 2010 might affect Hugo’s prospects for reimbursement.

Despite the fact that local legislators remain supportive of the reimbursement eff ort, the state’s yawning budget deficit, which has already caused reductions in Local Government Aid subsidies to cities, may make it difficult for other legislators to lend their support.

Governor Tim Pawlenty arrived in Hugo by helicopter the morning following the May 25, 2008 tornado.
In light of the state's current financial woes, however, it remains to be seen whether the city of Hugo will
receive any state financial assistance.

The artwork of Centerville 4th graders decorates St.
