Hey, Katie K-9!

I know from reading your column that you have a recipe that helps get the skunk smell out if your dog should happen to meet one.

Well, the other night my dog did. I have tried many things so far with no luck. Can you repeat what the recipe is so my dog can come back into the house? Thanks!

Al

Dear Al!

Phew! No problem - here it is.

Remember, this treatment is great for all bad smells on dogs or humans. The reason this can not be marketed is that it will blow up all the containers.

1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide

1/4 cup baking soda

1 tablespoon liquid dish soap (Dawn works well)

Mix all together in a pail. It will foam up a lot. Sponge on, keeping it away from your dog's eyes and mouth. Let it stay on for at least three minutes, then rinse with warm water. Repeat if needed.

Good luck!

Hey, Katie K-9!

It is almost fall and with it comes cockleburs. I am going nuts picking them out of my horse's mane and tail - and removing them from my dog's coat, as well. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Claire

Hey, Claire!

You bet! It is called Pam. Just spray a little on, work it into the burr and it will pull out very easily! Pam is available in most any grocery store, but I have found that it is cheapest at Sam's Club. I go through a lot of it every fall. Take care!

Hey, Katie K-9!

I have a 3-year-old Yorkie mix. She gets very nervous at times, and paces and paces. Different things that send her into this pacing mode. It seems the older she gets the worse it is getting. My vet has suggested putting her on some kind of medicine for it. She is so small - only 5 pounds - that I worry about overmedicating her. Is there something I can give her that will calm her naturally? Thanks for your help.

Di

Hey, Di!

Yep, it is called Rescue Remedy.

You can find it at health food stores. Just put a couple of drops ON the flap of her ear, NOT IN the ear. That should help calm her down. You may have to do it a couple of times, 15 minutes apart. You can also put a couple of drops in her water at times. Rescue Remedy is great for any animal that seems upset or nervous.

A side note from Katie K-9 With the cool nights of fall come fleas looking for a warm place to live. Do a flea check on your pet a couple of times each week with a flea comb. Run the comb under your pet's chin, over their rump and between their back legs. With each comb-through, dip the comb in a jar of warm water combined with a drop of liquid dish soap. Pull off any hair on the comb and run the comb through your pet's coat again.

Wash all pet bedding weekly, and vacuum more at this time of year. Cats are the most likely to bring fleas into the home. They like to roll in the sand and fleas like sand for warmth. A simple flea comb and bit of your time is all you need. Please stay away from the chemicals, they are not good for our pets or our environment.
