Hey, Katie K-9! I have a Shep/Lab mix, he is 6 months old and he gets car sick every time I try to have him go for a ride with me. I really want to take him more places, but you can understand why I do not. My Vet told me to give him Benadryl. Well. he still got sick and was very tired the rest of the day. Any ideas here?

Tonya

Hey, Tonya! Benadryl only helps in car rides if your dog is antsy in the car. For the car sickness, start giving him a pinch of ground ginger daily in a tablespoon of plain yogurt. Once he likes the ginger, then get natural gingersnaps; they have more ginger in them. When you are going for a car ride, give a couple gingersnaps to him a half hour before you go. Ginger settles the stomach—it works for people, too.

Take care!

Hey, Katie K-9! My Boxer is getting food-aggressive. He growls if we walk by his dish now. We were told to put our hands in his dish while he is eating, but it seems to be getting worse. We have kids and are worried they may get bitten. Any other suggestions?

Maye

Hey, Maye! Many times we create the problem of food aggression by doing what you are doing. How would you like it if when you sat down to eat, someone started playing with your food? Many dogs feel the same way.

The best thing to do is to feed your dog behind a closed door, like a laundry room or bathroom. Behind a closed door, the dog does not feel the need to guard his food from you or even other dogs or cats.

Every dog in the house should have their own space and area to eat in. Many dogs get fat by going food surfi ng in other bowls if the other dogs do not care. After your dog is done eating, pick up the bowls until next feeding time.

Some dogs even guard an empty bowl. The worst thing to do is scold the dog for this. Work with your dog, not against him. In time, you should be able to leave the door open, if you have only one dog, and eventually walk by him with no problem. Take your time with this one.

Hey, Katie K-9! I have a big mutt, 90 pounds, a good dog in most ways, but he goes nuts when I try to mow the grass with my riding lawn mower. It was funny at first, but now it’s unnerving. No matter how much I yell at him, he will not quit. Help!

Todd

Hey, Todd! By yelling at him, he thinks you like to yell at the mower, too!

Let’s all yell together at the mower!

What worked for me and my newly acquired Boxer/Dane mix was, I got one of those bigger sprayers that you can put window cleaner in or water for plants. I filled it with water and set it on stream.

I held it at my right side, I rode the mower right next to the fence on my left side (be sure the mower is blowing away from the dog). When Zelda charged the fence barking and barking at the mower, I quickly blasted her in the face with the sprayer and said “AHHH Leave it!” By the third time I drove past, Zelda headed to the middle of the play yard and to this day will not even come near the mower when I drive by.

I hope this helps, especially for next year!
