Hey, Katie K-9!
How do I cut my dog's toe- nails? Thanks
Nancy
Hey, Nancy!
Many well-meaning owners have tried and have created a neurotic dog. They cut the quick in the nail (that is, the vein in the nail) and now nobody can cut the poor dog's toenails without muzzling or even sedating the dog. If you really want to learn how to do it right, have your vet or groomer SHOW you how to do it right. Personally, I feel the money spent by having the vet or groomer do it is money well spent. If you hit that nail quick, it will cost you much more to have the vet or groomer do it because they now will need a team to cut your dog's nails. The quick grows with the nail. If the nail is very long, those nails will have to be trimmed once every two weeks for some time to get the quick to recede. The best I can offer you is to just trim the tip or the hook of the end of the nail. Do not cut into the meat of the nail; that is where the quick is. Stay calm, if you can do a nail a day, great! Just take your time, and give a belly rub after you are done. Only try it when your dog is tired. Good luck! Katie K-9!

Hey, Katie K-9!
So, I am out of ideas and disgusted to the max. Two of my three dogs are eating doo doos - fresh, frozen - apparently they are not picky! Their diet is the same, nothing has changed. I have tried to stay on top of scooping the doo doos, but with three dogs it is nearly impossible! I tried putting Tobasco sauce on some and they both went over and licked it! Any ideas? I heard about some additive you can put in the dogs' food that supposedly make the doo doos taste bad. What do you think?
HELP!
Britt
Hey, Britt!
As for putting hot sauce or pepper on the doo doos, you are just seasoning the doo doos for your dogs. There are some products on the market to put in their food, but I have found that that approach works for maybe a week - then you're back to the same problem. The thought on this is not that they are lacking something in their diet, but that the good bacteria in their digestive system is low. I would suggest giving each dog a tablespoon of plain yogurt and Probiotic with plant enzymes to help put those good digestive enzymes back in. You can visit www.animalessentials. com to order some, or Central Bird & Animal Hospital carries it. Sometimes changing the dog food you are feeding makes a difference also.

Hey, Katie K-9!
I can't take it anymore! My dog's fl atulence is ruining my environment and my social life! My friends won't come over unless I put him outside!
Candi
Hey, Candi!
Flatulence, or "fluffs," as my mom made us call them, are mostly caused by the foods you are feeding and how your dog's system handles them. Low-grade commercial dog foods and treats, dairy products and chewies can be the cause. Each dog's system is different; what bothers one may not bother another. First, if you have been feeding the same commercial dog food for more than three years, it is time for a change. Pull all treats and chewies and use only fruits and vegetables. Some suggestions are: baby carrots, broccoli, green beans, sliced fruits (no grapes or raisins - they can cause renal failure). You need to add plain natural yogurt once daily: 1 teaspoon for a small dog, 2 teaspoons for a medium dog, 1 tablespoon for a large dog. I would also include a Probiotic with plant enzymes. These products will help build up the good bacteria in your dog's digestive system. A side note: if you have your dog on antibiotics or other medications, your pet will benefi t greatly by adding these to their diet, too. You can find the Probiotics at www.animalessentials.com.
Here's to a better social life and clear air!
