Hey, Katie K-9!

My Shep/Husky mix, Samson, is still jumping on our guests. He is now over one year old. How much longer do I have to wait until he "gets it" and keeps all four paws on the floor? He is good when we have him on the leash when guests are around. But as soon as we take it off, he is airborne! HELP! Fewer and fewer people want to stop by because of his 87 pounds of bounce!

Frustrated,

Matt

Hey, Matt and Samson!

You already answered your question: keep him on the leash while guests are around so YOU stay in control. He is a big dog in size, but his brain is still in the "terrible twos." Samson is testing you a lot during this time. He has to mentally mature and you have to keep the control so he forgets about doing it wrong and finally can keep all four on the floor. The day will come ... just be patient.

If you do not have the time to have him on the leash, put him in his kennel for awhile. When he gets too excited when on the leash, stand on the leash about eight to 12 inches from the hook. You may want to use both feet so he does not put you on your hindend. Do not say anything to him, totally ignore him. Just let him figure it out and he will finally lay down and relax. The more you do this with him, the faster he will relax.

Just relax and keep the control.

Hey, Katie K-9!

I have two puppies from the same litter, a female, Abby, and her brother Toby. They are now 13 months old. I can't believe my eyes! Toby tries to breed his sister! How can this be? They are related!

Carol

Hey, Carol and family!

In the animal world, brothersister relationships mean absolutely nothing. If something is in "heat" ( in "season"), it is time to breed! I hope they are both "fixed."
