Reserves Receives Turtleman Donation
Lt. Scott McGuire, with the Lino Lakes Police Reserves, was on hand at the City Council meeting of Oct. 23 to accept a donation in the amount of $5,600 from the Turtleman Triathlon.
For three out of the past six years, athletes have voted the Turtleman Triathlon the Triathletes' Choice of the Year. Next year marks the 25th year for the triathlon, and the all-volunteer event is growing rapidly.
In the last two years, the number of participants in the event has doubled, Mark Strange, Bicycle Coordinator and Assistant Race Director, said at the meeting.
The number of participants is around 1,000, with 75 relays. With such a high number of athletes running on city streets, traffic officers are required. Lino Lakes Reserve Officers, who are not paid, guarded around eight intersections last year as the triathletes raced through town.
Entry fees are becoming substantial. "We end up with a profit and have to get rid of the money somehow, since we're non-profit," Strange said. Surpluses are also donated to various youth organizations.
"[Officer McGuire] told me most of the money will go towards uniforms and equipment," Strange said.
VFW Auxiliary Donates Funds
At its meeting of Oct. 23, the Lino Lakes City Council accepted $1,000 in charitable gambling proceeds from the VFW Post 6583 Ladies' Auxiliary on behalf of the Centennial Fire District, which cannot accept such funds directly.
The contribution, which will be paid to the Centennial Fire District by the city, is earmarked to defray the cost of its annual Safety Camp.
Temporary CSO Offered Position
Terina Peterson, who has been serving the city of Lino Lakes on a temporary basis for approximately six months as acting Community Services Officer (CSO), was offi cially offered the position by the City Council to the part-time position. The promotion of William Owns to the position of police officer had left a vacancy in the CSO Program.
Boulevard Tree Planting Authorized
The City Council unanimously approved the award of the 2006 Boulevard Tree Planting Project to Midwest Landscapes, which will plant 52 new boulevard trees within the city for a total of $12,611.00.
The trees, which include oaks, maples and elms, will be planted in Clearwater Creek, Highland Meadows, Hailey Manor, Oakwood View, Ravens Hollow, Spirit Hills, Stoneybrook, Turnberry Crossing and West Shadow Ponds.
